Drew's studio news - May 2023

MAY 2023

April showers bring May... artwork? After a busy winter I finally have the time to devote to making art. April through July is one of my down times during the year and I've been taking full advantage by making art almost daily.🙌🎨

On to studio news...

STUDIO NEWS

Recent studio work

I've started working in a real life sketchbook! You know I like working in board books (check out my free board book class) because there's something already printed on the page. The blank white paper of a sketchbook always dissuaded me, until I decided recently that I needed to make myself get over that so my art can progress.

I'm using Tombow markersDerwent Inktense pencils, collage, and acrylic paint.

This is a new way of working for me, so there's lots to learn. I've accepted the uncomfortableness of not knowing how the final sketchbook spread will look and learning how to use unfamiliar tools and media. I'm also learning that I don't need to (and shouldn't) show every sketchbook spread online... it's ok to keep some art for myself.

IG INSPIRATION

Cecily Lowe

My current Instagram crush is Cecily Lowe.

Lowe is a mixed media artist based in Alabama. I love her swirly mark making creativity combined in to sophisticated collages. Lowe is "inspired by color & light" and her abstract paintings are "intuitive, focusing on layering paint."

Check out Cecily's work!
