Tutorial: creating texture using magazine transfers on a gel plate

TUTORIAL

We all love magazine transfers on a gel plate. But it doesn’t always need to be a beautiful photo of a model. I like transferring textures since I mostly use my prints as collage fodder.

A few tips…

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Flip through Fashion and decor magazines with glossy pages and look for different patterns and/or images that are abstract.

Images with high contrast work the best. That is, images with both darks and lights.

Cut out the sections of the pages you’d like to use and have several prepared when you start printing.

THE TRANSFER

Add your paint to the plate. A thinner coat of paint works best for me. Liquitex BASICS gives me the best results.

Lay your magazine page pieces on the plate and press. Let them lay on the plate for 1-2 minutes, then remove from the plate.

Let the paint dry.

PULLING THE PRINT

Once the transfer image is dry, add more paint to the plate and roll it out to a thin layer. Add your paper and press. Let the paper sit on the plate for a while… several minutes. Then pull the print.

Full transparency, it doesn’t always work. There’s a lot of reasons why, which are too numerous to list here. I usually just go for it because it still can create a nice texture for collage fodder.

You can use any kind of paper… above I’m using deli paper which is fun to use for collage.

Have fun!💥🎉🎨
