Drew's studio news - April 2024

APRIL 2024

Happy spring if you're in the northern hemisphere.🌷

Speaking of spring, my thoughts are now turned to fresh starts and renewal. After the successful Collage Makers Summit, I'm focused on spring cleaning, creating new artwork, and refreshing my online gel plate class... more on that later. 😉

Now on to studio news...

STUDIO NEWS

Recent studio work

Because of my winter schedule, I was limited to the iPad for art making. I'm really enjoying working digitally... I've even started getting used to Procreate for digital collage.😱

Using an iPad not only leverages the convenience of digital tools but also opens up creative possibilities, allowing me to experiment with texture, color, and perspective to craft collages that reflect the complex and multifaceted nature of urban environments which fascinates me so much.

Color Improvisations 3

I’m happy to finally share that my quilt Urban Fabric no. 10 is included in Color Improvisations 3 which recently opened at Museum Tuch + Technik in Neumünster, Germany.

This was the culmination of many years of working through the classes at the Crow Barn.

My Urban Fabric series uses digital collages to explore the controlled chaos and the iconography of urban environments. I digitally manipulate my own photography and monoprints, then print on to fabric. The pieces are then machine pieced and quilted. This piece is 6.5 feet square/just under 2 meters.

The show is open through 22 September 2024.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Gel plate collages

Almost all my collages use papers I made on a Gelli plate. It’s a great way to use up all those gel printed papers you have laying round.

But did you know you can use a gel plate WHILE you are creating the collage?

While you might already have a treasure trove of gel-printed papers stashed away, using the Gelli plate as a dynamic tool during the very act of collage creation is another captivating dimension to explore.

Merge the spontaneity of the Gelli plate with the intricacy of collage. Click to learn more!
