Drew's studio news - May 2024

MAY 2024

It's been bittersweet around here lately as I have retired from coaching my high school group after 18 years. I was sad to leave, but it was time to move on to new adventures. I'm not leaving completely - I will still be involved, just on a limited basis. That will give me more time to focus on my growing business and making art.

Speaking of making art... on to studio news...

STUDIO NEWS

Recent studio work

I've been busy making art! I've been working almost exclusively in my sketchbooks and on my iPad, but I've been itching to start on a new series of quilts... hopefully soon.

I've been exploring new media, including Tombow markers, Derwent Inktense pencils (so cool!), and acrylic alcohol inks. I'm hoping soon to also add alcohol markers to my arsenal.

I also finally got out my GIANT Gelli plate, which is 16"x20" (40.5cmX51cm), so I can make big pieces of collage papers for my equally GIANT A3 Daler Rowney sketchbook. Working big with collage is new to me and I'm hoping to continue.

Class redesign

I'm so excited to announce my popular online class, Print Your Creativity: Exploring Gel Plates is undergoing extensive redesign and will have a re-grand opening soon.

The online class is delivered via pre-recorded videos lessons. It covers basic gel plate printing techniques and progresses to more intermediate techniques.

We'll be covering topics like: different kinds of paint and how to use them, layering on the plate, mark making on the plate with tools like paint markers, using and making stencils and masks, magazine and laser transfers, making grungy prints, and much more.

If you are already enrolled in the class you will automatically be granted access to the updates. If you are not in the class, be on the look out for more info in the coming weeks.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Water on a gel plate? YUP!

Using water on a Gelli plate to craft visual textures is a captivating artistic experience.

As the water interacts with the water-based acrylic paint, it produces a unique visual texture. It creates an element of unpredictability and spontaneity, resulting in intriguing textures.

Let me show you how! Click to learn more on my blog.
