Tutorial: make your own stencils & masks to use on a gel plate

TUTORIAL

My artwork started looking like ME when I started making my own stencils and masks.

Sure, there’s lots of commercially made stencils out there you can use on a gel plate, but why not make your own… and in the process make your art look like YOU!

Let me show you how…

MAKE YOUR STENCILS

You can use paper or plastic/film for your stencils. In the video I am reusing a Tyvek envelope. Tyvek is very strong and thin… perfect for stencils. I also like using Graphix Clear-lay film.

Use a large marker to draw your design, then use a craft knife to cut out your shapes.

Be sure to keep the cutouts so you can use them as masks.

PRINTING WITH STENCILS & MASKS

Add your paint to the plate, then lay your stencil on top.

Add your paper and press. Be sure to rub evenly across the entire sheet of paper. Then, pull the print.

Printing with masks is similar…

Add the paint to the plate, then lay your masks on the plate. Add your paper, press, and pull the print.

I especially like using masks with darker opaque paint to cover up an existing print.

Have fun!💥🎉🎨
